ONTONAGON COUNTY - Colder temperatures have returned to the U.P. with a Winter Weather Advisory in effect for Ontonagon County through 1 AM EST Friday, Jan. 2.
The National Weather Service in Marquette reports lake effect snow is expected, with up to five inches in higher elevations. Areas that will see the most snowfall include south of Houghton to Rockland, Ontonagon, and the Porcupine Mountains. Winds may gust as high as 35 miles per hour.
Meanwhile, both the trail system and Lake Gogebic remain outstanding for snowmobiles. Trails 13, 101, 137, South Boundary Road, and 102 are in pristine condition.
Recent overnight lows have finally solidified what was a slushy, soupy base on Lake Gogebic. About a foot of light powder snow is on the lake, with many areas outside of the “highways” still untouched.
