MERRIWEATHER - This weekend is Michigan’s Free Snowmobile Riding. Key details:
➡️ Dates: January 10-11, 2026.
➡️ What's Free: No snowmobile registration or trail permit required.
➡️ Where: All Michigan state-designated snowmobile trails, public roads, and lands where snowmobiling is permitted.
➡️ Who: Open to both Michigan residents and out-of-state visitors.
➡️ Still Required: All other rules, like age requirements for safety courses and the Recreation Passport where needed, remain in effect.
Michigan's snowmobile program is 100% funded by trail permit and registration dollars.
The funds pay for grooming, signage, maintenance, bridge and culvert construction, purchase of new equipment, liability insurance; maintenance of trailhead amenities (signage, bathrooms, plowing of parking lots) and other snowmobile-related expenditures.
Trail passes can be purchased at many local establishments around Lake Gogebic.
