The months of September, October, and November did not disappoint across the northern skies, and from Lake Gogebic to Lake Superior in the darkness of night, the brightest of lights opened up from the heavens.
The colors of the Aurora Borealis come from solar particles colliding with the Earth’s atmosphere. Here’s a breakdown of the colors and why you see them in our sky:
Green: between 60 and 150 miles
Red: above 150 miles
Purple: lower altitudes, often at the aurora’s edge
The colors, which sometime appear as a glow, can also create “curtains” - which seem to hang from the sky.
